Soundscapes of Reflection at Amsterdam Fringe

Producing None of Us Are Enjoying This at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival was a truly remarkable experience. This spoken word and soundscape performance, brought to life by the talented Jackie Ashkin and Jędrzej Jędraszyk, was a journey that felt as immersive behind the scenes as it was for the audiences who attended. Even though I had already experienced this performance a few months ago, it was a whole new journey to adapt it to the festival.

Jackie Ashkin’s ability to weave intricate tales of living between cultures and finding meaning in a world of chaos was spellbinding. Her spoken word transported us through twenty years of reflection, tapping into themes of identity, societal pressures, and personal discovery. Jędrzej Jędraszyk, with his deeply soothing ambient guitar loops, provided the perfect sonic complement. His soundscapes, layered with natural sounds and whispering conversations, created a meditative atmosphere that grounded the intense emotions of Jackie’s performance.

As a producer, witnessing this artistic alchemy unfold over those two weeks was a privilege. Both venues in Amsterdam offered something unique. The smaller, more intimate space felt like a quiet sanctuary, where every sound and word resonated deeply with the audience. In contrast, the larger venue allowed for a broader, more diverse audience to experience the piece, creating an incredible shift in energy.

Each night, the reactions varied, as different audience members brought their own stories, fears, and perspectives into the space. Some evenings, the air was heavy with silence, as people absorbed the weight of the words and sounds; other nights, there were moments of laughter and camaraderie, a shared relief at making light of the chaos that surrounds us.

More than anything, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented and inspiring individuals. Jackie and Jędrzej brought vulnerability, creativity, and a fearless willingness to explore our collective anxieties. As a team, we pushed boundaries and found new ways to connect with audiences, making this project an unforgettable part of my journey as a producer.
